GCash now among most-used finance apps in Middle East after Kuwait, Saudi rollout

PH’s #1 finance super app supports OFWs as trusted global financial partner

More than half of overseas Filipino workers reside in the Middle East, according to 2022 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). Remittances from the region have historically strengthened the Philippines’ economy and served as a lifeline for families relying on their loved ones’ sacrifice to work abroad. As the leading finance superapp for Filipinos around the world, GCash has emerged as one of the most-used finance apps in the Middle East.

Based on statistics from data.ai, GCash is the second most-used app in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for June and July 2024, with over 900,000 active users each month. In Qatar, GCash is ranked ninth in terms of number of active users, with over 50,000 users.

The app is now also available in Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, allowing Filipinos there to use GCash with their international mobile numbers. GCash announced in February 2024 that it has received the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' approval to expand to the two areas, as well as the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, and Germany. GCash Overseas first rolled out in the U.S., Canada, Italy, the UK, Australia, and Japan.

GCash will also be available in other countries in the Middle East soon, namely Bahrain and Oman.

"For OFWs, there is something about products and services that are made for Filipinos, by Filipinos," said GCash International General Manager Paul Albano. "GCash has assessed the needs of OFWs, not just in terms of having digital finance solutions but also in what they need to be empowered economically–especially in the Middle East with its unique Filipino demographic and community."

"We thank our dear Filipinos in the Middle East for their trust in GCash," added Albano. This is our greatest honor: to innovate tirelessly, crafting financial services that will empower you to build brighter futures for yourselves and your loved ones."

GCash is committed to ensuring that the hard-earned money OFWs send home is received by their families. The Send Money for free feature (across GCash accounts) saves them from incurring costs for every transaction. Through the Pay Bills portal, OFWs have both full visibility and control of how they handle their local financial obligations, allowing them to properly allot their earnings and avoid unnecessary expenses.

Most importantly, GCash enables them to do all these transactions wherever they may be. OFWs no longer need to worry about going out to go to a remittance center, or to banks, which are typically closed on holidays and weekends. They also avoid the additional cost of traveling to these establishments.

“GCash is committed to serving all Filipinos wherever they may be in the world,” Albano said. “By enabling their access to our financial services, we’re helping them thrive every day, be ready for a rainy day, and be prepared for one day—and we already see that how OFWs use GCash reflects how they support their families now and in the future.”
